  • Introduce Maya Angelou's famous quote to your kids and have a family discussion about what it means and how it applies to their life.

  • Who is Maya Angelou?

  • Maya Angelou was an American author, actress, screenwriter, dancer, poet and civil rights activist. As a child she endured racial prejudice, sexual abuse and was a first-hand witness to violence. Due to trauma, Maya stopped talking for 5 years. However, she found her voice in art. She recieved many awards including a Pulitzer nomination and two NAACP Image Awards.

  • How would you explain this quote to someone else?

  • How does _ make you feel? What do they do that makes you feel that way?

  • How do you want to make someone feel? What will you do to make someone feel that way tomorrow?

  • Family Activity

  • Pizza Faces

  • Put everyone's names in a hat. Have each family member pull a name out. Assign each person to make a pizza that looks like the person whose name they pulled out.

  • Ingredients

  • Pizza dough (You can get this in the freezer section, use a mix or make it from scratch)

  • Pizza sauce

  • Grated cheese

  • Pizza toppings — Meats, veggies and fruits

  • Directions

  • Give each family member a piece of dough. Let them mold it into the shape of a face (it should be flat).

  • Add sauce, cheese and toppings to make the pizza look like the family member.

  • Cook according to dough directions (the dough should be golden brown and the cheese melted)

  • Take out of the oven and enjoy!
